The hand-cranked swivel bridge was built in the late 1800s when Bayou St. John was still in use as a commercial waterway. In 1908-1909, the bridge was moved about a quarter-mile from its original location at Esplanade Avenue to Harding Street.

It is a Pratt Truss bridge that originally pivoted at the center to allow commercial vessels and barges to pass through the bayou. Prior to the 1970s the bridge was open to vehicular traffic but is now limited to pedestrians and bicyclists. The bridge connects Cabrini High School to Harding Drive and the neighborhood once known as Magnolia Gardens.

Magnolia Bridge has been a popular neighborhood gathering spot for performances, picnics, sunset drinking clubs and weddings for many years
